Understanding the Basics of Soil Structure Types

 Soil structure types is an important physical aspect of soil that impacts the growth of plants and other organisms. It is determined by the type and size of the soil particles, the amount of pore space between the particles, and the arrangement of the particles. The soil particles can be clay, silt, sand, and organic matter, and the arrangement of the particles can aid in nutrient and water retention. Soil structure is classified into five basic types: single-grained, crumb, blocky, platy, and prismatic.

Single-grained structure is the most simple of the five soil structures. It refers to soil particles that are isolated from each other forming individual grains. It is not recommended for agricultural use as it offers poor water and nutrient holding ability.


Crumb structure is common in clay soils and is formed when clay particles are aggregated together in small clumps. It allows for good water and nutrient retention, making it suitable for agricultural use.

Blocky structure is mostly found in loamy soils and is formed when clumps of soil aggregate together forming small cubes or blocks. This allows for good water and nutrient retention and drainage, making it a suitable structure for agricultural use.

Platy structure is found in silty soils and is formed when clay particles or smaller particles are arranged in thin layers. It is not suitable for agricultural use as it does not allow for good water and nutrient retention or drainage.

Finally, prismatic structure is found in sandy soils and is formed when the particles are arranged in long, vertical hexagonal shapes. This structure allows for excellent drainage and aeration, making it suitable for agricultural use.

Understanding the basics of soil structure types is essential for agricultural and horticultural use. Knowing the type and formation of soil structure is important in order to identify the soil’s suitability for growing plants. Single-grained, platy and prismatic structures need to be improved with fertilizers and organic matter while crumb and blocky structures are naturally suitable for agricultural use.
