The broken-down material, known as regolith, eventually accumulates and mixes with organic material to form a new soil layer.


Physical weathering is the breakdown of rocks due to physical forces such as wind, water, ice, and temperature fluctuations. Wind, the most common form of physical weathering, carries small particles of dust, sand, and silt, and blows them around, scraping away the surfaces of exposed rocks. As these particles settle, they gradually form a soil covering.


Chemical weathering involves chemical bonds that break down rocks due to the natural reaction of elements, such as oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide. Oxygen is especially reactive and causes minerals to dissolve. These dissolved minerals are then carried away by wind and water, leaving behind a new soil layer.


Biological weathering involves the activities of living organisms that break down rocks. Examples of this include the burrowing of animals, the growth of plant roots, and the action of acids from lichens and bacteria. All of these work to create a new soil layer.


Once a new soil layer has formed, it must be cultivated to provide the necessary nutrients for plants and other life. This is done through the addition of organic material, such as compost, manure, and fertilizer, as well as through techniques such as tilling.


Soil production is an essential process for the growth and development of life on the planet. Without it, plants and other organisms would not have access to the nutrients they need to survive. By understanding the processes involved in soil production, we can take steps to ensure the health of our planet and its inhabitants.
